Beginning October 19, 2023, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) now requires multifactor authentication (MFA) for individuals and businesses to use the system.

MFA is a cybersecurity best practice and adds another layer of security to the EFTPS.

How to Add MFA

You will be required to log in to EFTPS and will be prompted to register and/or authenticate with a Credential Service Provider, ID.me, or Login.gov. If you have not registered for one, you can do so here.

Once you’ve authenticated, you’ll be redirected back to the EFTPS to log in again.

The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System is provided by the U.S. Department of Treasury and is used by millions of individuals, businesses, and nonprofits to securely process tax payments.
