In addition to the IRS’s expanded online services, the State of Michigan is also encouraging taxpayers to set up and use Michigan Online Accounts (MI Open Accounts). This initiative is designed to improve secure access to tax information and support electronic payments and correspondence.
According to a recent announcement from the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS), online accounts play an increasingly important role in protecting taxpayers while streamlining interactions with state agencies.
Benefits of a Michigan Online Account
Creating a Michigan Online Account allows taxpayers to:
- Securely make and manage electronic payments
- Access tax-related information and account details
- Receive notices and communications electronically
- Reduce processing delays associated with paper filings and payments
- Enhance identity verification and fraud prevention
As Michigan continues to modernize its tax systems, taxpayers with online access will be better positioned to manage their accounts efficiently and avoid unnecessary delays.
Why This Matters
Both federal and state tax agencies are moving toward more digital-first systems. While setting up an online account is not currently required, it is strongly encouraged as part of broader efforts to improve security, accuracy, and service delivery.
As tax preparers, we support this initiative because it gives taxpayers greater transparency into their accounts and helps resolve issues more quickly when questions arise.
